Dry eye syndrome, a chronic condition in which the eyes fail to produce sufficient tears or produce tears of inadequate quality, has become what many optometrists now describe as a quiet epidemic. Staying well hydrated, reducing caffeine intake, and taking brief visual breaks during extended screen sessions all contribute to a healthier tear environment.

For patients with persistent or severe symptoms, prescription options including cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion and lifitegrast drops address the inflammatory component of the condition rather than simply supplementing tears. Punctal plugs, tiny devices inserted into the tear drainage ducts, can help retain natural tear volume for patients who produce adequate but insufficiently retained tears.
